With habituation to the caretakers, mice can be handled freely instead of using restrainment, which is less stressful for the animals.
Mouse with a double canula implant targeting the hippocampus, to deliver drug intracranially. The canula is protected by a screw-on cap, to protect the implant. Post-surgery mice recover for a week for the skin around the implant to fully heal. Animals can live with this implant for several months, and are used to the researcher removing the protective cap and later infusing the drugs, which does not hurt them as there are no pain receptors in the brain.
Rat cage housing two animals, separated by a divider. Animals can see and smell each other but not directly interact. In cases where animals need to be single-housed, alternatives such as these dividers can be applied to fulfil their social needs while still maintaining the individual control.

Rats are social animals and are housed in groups of four. An enriched environment is pictured here, with toys, two different levels, and alternative drinking placements.

Head-fixed mouse running on a movable belt, while exploring a virtual environment. The animal is rewarded with soy-milk once particular goals are reached, which can be seen as a small hose in front of the face of the animal.
Researcher monitoring activity of rodent with optic fiber implants performing a behavioral task. The animal is able to freely move within the environment
Mouse implanted with two optic fibers, in order to record neural activity by fiber photometry.
Head-fixed mouse in a two-photon calcium imaging setup. The animal is observing a virtual reality maze, and can navigate forward by walking on a movable belt.
Gnawing box used to characterize rat behavior. Biting and gnawing are characteristic behaviors of rodents, and if done excesivelly it can indicate congitive malfunction.
Researcher observing rats within phenotyper cages. Long periods can be recorded and analyzed with minimum disturbance to the rats.
