About EARA

Who we are

The European Animal Research Association (EARA) is a global communications and advocacy membership organisation, representing both the public and private institutions in the biomedical sector.

Since EARA was established in 2014, we have driven efforts across Europe – and, increasingly, worldwide – to foster a change in the way the biomedical community communicates with society about research using animals.
We promote understanding of the continued need for, and benefits of, animal studies in advancing our knowledge of disease, including cancer and dementia, as well as in drug development. Alongside this, we share knowledge about advances in new-approach methodologies that, in some areas, are helping to replace and reduce the use of animals.

Our mission and vision

Our mission is to be the leading voice in Europe and globally for organisations that use animals for scientific purposes and to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and understand the use of animals for as long as animals  are needed.
Our vision is that animal research is understood by society as still a critical part of the scientific process, leading to an informed and beneficial climate for innovation and progress for the benefit of human and animal and environmental health.

What we do

EARA Strategy 2023 – 2028

To meet the ambitions of our vision and mission and to reach our key audiences, we have identified five core strategy objectives.
  1. Establish EARA as the leading and trusted voice in Europe representing organisations that use, breed and transport animals for scientific purposes.
  1. Drive the efforts to respond to the growing political pressure and campaigns seeking the premature end of the use of animals for scientific purposes.
  1. Drive cultural change, focusing on institutional policies and practices on how organisations communicate to the public about their use of animals for scientific purposes.
  1. Support and lead efforts to maintain a conducive operating environment for the use of animals in scientific research in Europe.
  1. Ensure that EARA has the resources and operational resilience to meet current and future demands on the association.

EARA has come a long way in a short time, but there is still much more to do and our core objectives for the next five years will help us stay on track to raise awareness of the important work being done in the life sciences across Europe.
